Rajasthan government grants industry status to tourism and hospitality sector

The Rajasthan government on Saturday granted industry status to the tourism and hospitality sector in the state.

According to an official statement, the Minister of Urban Housing Development and Local Self-Government, Shanti Dhariwal, issued a notification to this effect on Saturday.

In the budget announcement in February, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the tourism and hospitality sector would be granted industry status.

The tourism sector in the state, like everywhere else in the country and around the world, has been badly affected during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The sector will greatly benefit from this announcement by the state government,” the statement released on Saturday said.

Granting industry status means that the electricity tariff and certain other taxes levied on tourism and hotel operators would be at the same level as other industries rather than at the much higher commercial rates.

Gehlot had said when announcing the budget that these concessions would lead to a financial burden of Rs 700 crore per year on the national treasury.
