Government grants industry status to rice mills to boost exports

ISLAMABAD:

The federal government has decided in principle to grant industry status to rice processing plants in order to increase rice exports to $ 5 billion over the next four years.

In this regard, a high-level meeting discussed in detail the targets set under the Economic Awareness Initiative (EOI) which will be presented by the National Security Division of the Prime Minister.

The meeting took place in the presence of the Federal Secretary for National Food Security and Research, the Secretaries of Industry and Production of the four provinces as well as of Commerce, and the Presidents of the Federal Office of Revenue and of Pakistan Rice Export Association.

Sources said that it was agreed at the meeting to complete all formalities to grant industry status to rice processing factories.

Sources said several meetings have already taken place in this regard and a decision should be made as soon as the sector comes under the EOI introduced by the Prime Minister’s National Security Division.

Much importance is attached to this decision and Prime Minister Imran Khan himself is taking a keen interest in this issue.

According to the sources, the meeting also discussed the rice sales mechanism to increase prosperity by marking and registering Pakistani rice in the international market.

Sources said the goal is to increase rice exports to $ 5 billion over the next four years, while in the last fiscal year Pakistan exported a total of more than $ 2.1 billion. of rice dollars.
