BENGALURU: To help the hotel sector which has been affected by Covid, the state government has decided to give industry status to large hotels. Tourism Minister CP Yogeshwara said on Saturday that the move would also give a boost to the tourism sector. Smaller hotels, however, won’t get the tag.

The Hotel Association of India (HAI) has thanked the state government for granting this status. The decision will allow hotels to enjoy the benefits of electricity rates, property tax, refinancing of existing debt, hassle-free loans at subsidized interest rates, taxation and simplified approval process for hotel projects, the association said.

Somnath Mukherjee, member of the Karnataka State Committee, HAI, said that the hospitality sector will benefit from “industry status”. This will help in the long term and unlock its immense potential to make a significant contribution to the state’s GDP and jobs, thereby contributing to the region’s post-pandemic economic recovery, he said.
